Job Title: Supermarket Cashier
Job Description
Main Function:
- The Supermarket Cashier is responsible for managing customer transactions efficiently, accurately, and courteously.
- The role requires handling point-of-sale operations, ensuring proper cash handling, and delivering a seamless checkout experience.
- The ideal candidate must be friendly, reliable, detail-oriented, and able to work in a fast-paced retail environment while maintaining a professional demeanor.
Role Responsibilities
Transaction Processing:
- Accurately scan, price, and register purchases using POS systems.
- Receive payments via cash, card, transfer, or vouchers and provide accurate change.
- Issue receipts and bag merchandise properly.
- Ensure the POS is balanced at the beginning and end of each shift.
Customer Service:
- Greet customers warmly and provide responsive and friendly service.
- Answer product-related questions or direct customers to appropriate store personnel.
- Resolve minor customer complaints or escalate to the supervisor when necessary.
- Assist elderly or disabled customers as needed.
Cash & Payment Reconciliation:
- Maintain an accurate cash drawer and follow proper cash-handling procedures.
- Perform end-of-day cash reconciliation and submit reports to the accounts or store manager.
- Immediately report any discrepancies, errors, or suspicious activities.
Store Presentation & Cleanliness:
- Maintain a clean and orderly checkout area.
- Monitor and refill shopping bags, receipt paper, and other supplies as needed.
- Report equipment malfunctions (POS, scanners, etc.) to the supervisor promptly.
Compliance:
- Follow internal policies regarding transaction limits, refund protocols, and price overrides.
- Comply with safety, hygiene, and sanitation standards.
- Adhere to attendance and punctuality standards.
Qualifications and Experience
Education and Certifications:
- Minimum of SSCE / WAEC; OND or higher qualification is an advantage.
- Minimum of 1 – 2 years of experience as a cashier, preferably in a retail or supermarket environment.
- Familiarity with POS systems, cash registers, and retail operations.
- Basic math and computer skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and public holidays.
