The Next Engineers initiative is a global education and college readiness initiative focused on increasing the gender, ethnic, and racial diversity of the engineering field. The program will provide youth (ages 13-18) with hands-on exposure to engineering concepts and careers and ultimately award partial scholarships to pursue engineering degrees. Over the next decade, Next Engineers will reach more than 85,000 students globally in approximately 25 cities to develop the next generation of engineers focused on building a world that works.
FHI 360’s Global Education group works side by side with ministries, communities, schools, teachers and families to create education systems that respond to the complex, dynamic and diverse needs of the people they serve. Global Education programs emphasize the use of data for decision making, foster student-centered learning and promote education in fragile and post-conflict areas. Global Education is a leader in designing international exchanges that promote leadership, professional development and global collaboration. On Next Engineers, the Global Education group is responsible for project management and the technical oversight of education activities.
Job Summary:
The Technical Officer, Education (“Education Officer”) is responsible for overseeing the quality and delivery of learning experiences for each of the three Next Engineers programs. The Education Officer plays a lead role in recommending technical changes to the Next Engineers model to ensure that the programs provide meaningful experiences that propel participants along the pathway to becoming engineers.
The Education Officer will work at 80% time on the Next Engineering initiative, reporting directly to the Project Director, to:
- In collaboration with the MERL team, provide analysis and recommendations on whether and to what extent Next Engineers programs are achieving project goals, and advising the Project Director and Senior Advisors on how to revise programs to better reach desired project outcomes;
- Draft, review, and finalize activities, demonstrations, and other resources to be used in the Discovery program;
- Supervise work performed by consultants and/or Next Engineers staff that contribute to the development of Discovery program materials and resources;
- Recommend relevant research, literature, and other evidence bases to inform the full design of the Camp program;
- Design, oversee the development, and ensure the high quality of materials to support the Camp program;
- In collaboration with the College and Career Readiness (CCR) Specialist, draft, review, and finalize design challenges and other resources to be used in the Academy program;
- In collaboration with the CCR Specialist, ensure that academic and CCR concepts and ideas are fully integrated into the Academy program learning experience;
- Support the onboarding of the South Africa-based Community Partner, as directed by the Program Manager;
- Provide technical assistance in education domains for Community Partners as identified and requested by the Program Manager, including but not limited to: pedagogical support; resource adaptation; model contextualization; and education quality oversight; and
- In collaboration with the Project Director, travel to implementation sites to better understand and review initiative implementation, for the purpose of identifying and recommending course corrections, improvements, and other revisions to the Next Engineers implementation model.
In addition to the responsibilities listed above, the Education Officer will work at 20% time to support Global Education on programs, research, and business development in the areas including post-primary education, out-of-school programming, and STEM learning. In this capacity, the Education Officer will report to the Director for Post-Primary Education in Global Education, and undertake activities including:
- Review evidence bases and recommend strategies and approaches for programming in the technical areas described above;
- Design, develop, and draft program activities, materials, and resources in the technical areas described above; and
- Conduct related activities as assigned by the Director for Post-Primary Education in Global Education.
Experience:
- Typically requires 8+ years of relevant experience in STEM education required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of engineering education required.
- Familiarity with secondary schools and international educational development programming required.
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree or its International Equivalent in Knowledge/Information Services, Communications, Education, Environment, Health, Behavioral, Life/Social Sciences International Development, Human Development or Related Field.

- Ability to lift 5-50 lbs.
