Job Title: Field Manager Nigeria Mubi (International Hire & Internal Only Candidates)

Job Description

Background

Since 2015, NRC Nigeria has been working to help displacement-affected communities meet their basic needs, improve their livelihoods, access essential services, and enhance their resilience to future shocks through our six core competencies: Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), Shelter, Education, Information, Counselling and Legal Assistance (ICLA), Livelihoods and Food Security (LFS), Camp Management, and Protection. NRC provides immediate assistance during the onset of emergencies through the Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM). In 2021, NRC reached out to over 269,000 people with assistance.

The crisis in Nigeria is marked by brutal violence against civilians, causing acute humanitarian needs and displacement. In the northeast, the 13-year conflict has shattered lives, infrastructure, essential services, and social fabric.

Two million people are internally displaced across Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states. Approximately half of these live within local communities, increasing pressure on scarce resources. Access to food is limited, particularly in Borno state, where most families are already facing crisis levels of food insecurity. Civilians, including aid workers, continue to be the target of deadly attacks by non-state armed groups, and transport corridors are persistently insecure.

In the northwest and north-central regions, violence and displacement are rooted in disputes over land and resources, which have been worsened by climate change. Criminality is on the rise. Livelihood opportunities are scarce, and children face an uncertain future and are unable to access quality education. Many families have lost identity papers while fleeing or never obtained them, hindering their access to essential services.

What you will do:

The Field Manager will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of NRC programs in the Local Government Areas (LGAs) served by the Mubi Field Office. This individual should be a dedicated, ethical, and passionate humanitarian with experience in leadership and operations management, particularly in conflict and post-conflict settings in Africa. The Field Manager must possess strategic and visionary leadership skills and solid abilities in support functions (Logistics, Finance, and Human Resources), project, and personnel management. Additionally, the Field Manager should have the strength and vision to mentor young teams while ensuring adherence to NRC’s and donor compliance guidelines. The Field Manager is a member of the Area Management Team.

  • Manage the staff and activities of the Mubi Field Office.
  • Contribute to assessments of new operational areas, identifying potential intervention locations, and developing strategies for program implementation.
  • Assist in developing concept notes, project proposals, and budgets to expand programme activities.
  • Maintain regular communication with local authorities (political and security), and humanitarian actors within the Mubi operational area.
  • Represent NRC in coordination initiatives at the intervention area level.
  • Contribute to advocacy initiatives.
  • Ensure the overall safety of staff, including completing security risk assessments for potential new intervention areas.
  • Conduct regular checks on enumerators and community-based workers to ensure their selection aligns with NRC standards and guidelines.
  • Lead the Construction Completion Verification Teams (CCVTs) to assess the quality of completed construction project activities in the Mubi Field Office operational areas.
  • Support the Area Manager in training all staff and implementing capacity-building initiatives.
  • Ensure that all staff in the Mubi Field Office complete work and development plans and conduct performance feedback and check-in sessions monthly.
  • Ensure that NRC’s data collection systems function effectively, with information stored and analysed appropriately.
  • Assist in recruiting qualified and competent staff for the Mubi Field Office.
  • Contribute to establishing spending plans, ensuring that the master budget is consistently updated and reflects the cost-effective use of available funds.
  • Lead by example, embodying NRC’s core values of dedication, innovation, inclusion, and accountability.
  • Support NRC programs, particularly those aiding people affected by displacement due to conflict or insecurity and climate change.

What we are looking for:

  • Professional background and solid experience in Support Functions (Logistics, Finance, Human Resources), Office, and Programme Management.
  • Minimum of two years of international experience in humanitarian leadership and operations management, particularly in conflict and post-conflict settings in Africa.
  • Experience in overseeing the implementation of multi-sectoral and integrated humanitarian, durable solutions and emergency response programs.
  • Team leadership and capacity development experience
  • Knowledge of own leadership skills/profile
  • Fluency in English, both written and oral
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office, including strong Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook skills.

Context-related skills, knowledge, and experience

  • Experience in managing support functions and humanitarian programs in insecure contexts.
  • Experience in establishing relationships and coordinating with government and traditional leaders.
  • Experience in leading change management programmes in humanitarian action.
