Project Accountant at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)

Job Title: Project Accountant

Duties

• Ensure the preparation of prompt, timely, and accurate financial statements for donors.
• Review project budgets periodically and advise budget holders/PMs on potential project overruns.
• Ensure the prompt preparation and submission of invoices to donors.
• Coordinate assigned project audits throughout the year.
• Ensure the prompt and accurate computation of annual budgets.
• Ensure the prompt resolution of issues raised by Budget Officers/PMs.
• Contribute meaningfully to IITA’s overall cash flow management.
• Advice PMs on budget burn rates to avoid overruns and ineligible expenses.
• Support the institute’s annual audit with relevant schedules and respond to audit queries.
• Ensure timely justification of partners’ financial reports.
• Accurately verify all partners’ expenses based on supporting documents submitted with financial reports on assigned projects.
• Monitor budgets and ensure compliance.
• Ensure project expenditures do not exceed the life budget.
• Avoid ineligible overruns on each budget line.
• Eliminate project overruns through budget monitoring and variance analysis/burn rate tracking.
• Identify projects with overrun potential early through monthly budget monitoring reports.
• Prepare accurate and timely overhead and CSP charges at month-end for all active projects.
• Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.

Requirements
Qualifications:

• BSc / HND in Accounting, Finance, or other relevant fields of study with a minimum of eight (8) years’ experience performing similar role in a well-structured environment. 
• Professional certifications in ACA, ACCA is required; Masters’ degree is an added advantage.

Competencies
The ideal candidate must:

• Have knowledge of Oracle EBS application.
• Have a strong command of Microsoft Office suite.
• Have strong attention to details.
• Have experience in Project Finance Management.
