The Opportunity

Save the Children International has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as the– Humanitarian Policy and Advocacy Advisor at any existing Save the Children office location.

Role Purpose:

We’re seeking internal applications for a Humanitarian Policy and Advocacy Advisor to join us as part of the Policy and Advocacy team. This is a full-time parental leave cover role commencing November 2021 and concluding August 2022, and can be based in any location. 

Where you come in:

Reporting to Simon Henderson, Head of Policy, you’ll lead Save the Children Australia’s humanitarian advocacy work, with a view to influencing the policy and practice of the Australian government and relevant international institutions. You’ll develop strategic policy and advocacy products, as well as engage in direct lobbying to engage and influence key stakeholders including the Australian Government, the media, and the broader Australian community. You’ll focus particularly on protecting children in conflict, with special attention to priority crises which include Syria, Myanmar, Yemen, and Afghanistan.

You will make an impact by:

  • Identifying, analysing, and communicating key humanitarian policy issues pertaining to agreed focus areas, and identifying and capitalising upon opportunities at the national and international level
  • Producing high quality and strategic policy and advocacy products (letters, research reports, policy briefs etc), targeting the Australian government or other stakeholders as necessary
  • Representing Save the Children Australia and contributing to policy dialogue with high-level stakeholders including parliamentarians, the Australian government, the Australian Council for International Development, and other government and non-government actors
  • Engaging with program staff (Australia-based and international) to ensure that advocacy reflects programming and advocacy priorities identified by country programs

Does this sound like you?

You have an in-depth understanding and proven experience in using an array of advocacy tools to influence change, including private and public advocacy. You have high-level and robust policy analysis skills, paired with an ability to engage both critically and constructively with government and partners on current and emerging humanitarian affairs, along with the confidence and good judgement to make difficult decisions in complex and fast-moving policy areas.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

This role requires:

  • Higher degree in international relations, development, or related field
  • Significant experience in humanitarian programming, policy, and/or advocacy, including significant experience in conflict-affected or fragile environments
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of humanitarian policy issues
  • Strong advocacy skills, including the ability to develop strategies to influence change, identifying opportunities to advance Save the Children Australia’s humanitarian advocacy priorities
  • Excellent written and expressive communication skills, including the ability to adapt writing style for a range of audiences and products
  • Demonstrated experience in policy analysis and advocacy

We can offer circa £45,000 per annum (If based in UK) with an option of flexible working hours. If the role is based outside of the UK, National T&C (including pay) will apply.

This role can be based in (Location) or any existing Save the Children office location on approval, provided the successful candidate has proof of eligibility to work from the preferred location.
