According to The PUNCH, on Tuesday, October 3, Labour had scheduled the start of its indefinite nationwide strike to protest what it perceived as the government’s insufficient engagement and agreement concerning the consequences of the petrol price hike, which had caused significant hardships for Nigerian workers and the general populace.

Union leaders declared a complete shutdown until the government meets the demands of Nigerian workers and the general public, as stated in their joint statement dated September 26, 2023.

After signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on October 2, Labour suspended its plan for 30 days, reserving the right to resume the strike if the Federal Government fails to promptly implement the immediate aspects of the agreement.

Speaking on Tuesday, coinciding with the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, President Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, announced that his administration is partnering with the World Bank Group and other development partners to implement conditional cash transfers, business grants, and various forms of aid for the most vulnerable households through the National Social Safety Net Expansion Programme.

He emphasized, “This year’s theme, ‘Decent Work and Social Protection: Putting dignity in practice for all,’ perfectly aligns with our Renewed Hope agenda. My administration will spearhead efforts to ensure that every Nigerian has access to decent employment and consistent social protection.”

Furthermore, he outlined several initiatives, including a N100 billion investment to acquire 3,000 units of 20-seater Compressed Natural Gas-powered buses for affordable transportation. Additionally, there will be a N200 billion investment to cultivate 500,000 hectares of farmland to enhance food security. The distribution of 2000 metric tons of grains from strategic reserves to households across all states and the Federal Capital Territory is part of these efforts. Moreover, 225,000 metric tons of fertilizer and seedlings will be allocated to farmers dedicated to the nation’s food security.

Other initiatives include the release of 75 billion to support 100,000 SMEs and start-ups, the launch of the Renewed Hope Shelter Programme for the Poor, Refugees & Internally Displaced Persons, aimed at assisting one million households. Additionally, there is the introduction of the Renewed Hope Business Grants & Loans for Vulnerable Market women, farmers, and traders, designed for two million beneficiaries, among other programs.

Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, emphasized that 61 million Nigerians stand to benefit from the scheme every month from October to December. She highlighted that a total of 15 million households will receive 75,000 Naira over three months, directly benefiting approximately 61 million Nigerians through the conditional cash transfer program.

Why do we label it a conditional cash transfer? And what genuine impact can it have on Nigerians? To truly progress as a nation, we must collaborate and act together.

“We must recognize the urgent need for this intervention; Nigerians must experience the Renewed Hope agenda’s 75,000 Naira.”

Edu stressed that beyond the cash transfers, the federal government plans to provide “affordable housing for the poor and internally displaced persons, offering them shelter.

“Several other initiatives, like the Rural Vocational Skills Intervention, will be implemented on a large scale.

“All these endeavors are focused on addressing the diverse dimensions of poverty in the country.”

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, emphasized that the 63% poverty rate among Nigerians is unacceptable to President Tinubu.

“To Mr. President, and to all of us, this figure is completely unacceptable. That’s why combating poverty is his top priority. He has devised a program to stabilize and grow the entire economy,” stated Edun.

Meanwhile, Shubham Chaudhuri, the World Bank country representative, affirmed the widespread effectiveness of cash transfers in mitigating poverty. Chaudhuri emphasized that this approach is highly beneficial for citizens, particularly those facing economic shocks or rising living costs.

“This support is vital during the initial phase, preventing them from making decisions with lasting consequences, such as reducing meals or pulling their children out of school. The cash transfer model, referred to as ‘shock-responsive cash transfer,’ currently in use globally, offers temporary relief in such scenarios.”
