Skype interviews and other video interviews are becoming increasingly common in the hiring process.

Candidates who are able to effectively prepare for video interviews will increase their chances of impressing their interviewer over someone else, despite the fact that many of us are not entirely comfortable with the idea.

In this article we are going to work you through some essential tips that you need to know to ace your skype interview.

Contents

What is a Skype Interview

The entire interview is conducted by video chat on your computer during a Skype interview, also known as a video interview.

More and more interviewers are using Skype and video interviews to communicate with prospective candidates as technology develops.

It’s not just a terrific way to interview people who would otherwise have to travel, but it also gives interviewers a chance to learn more about you than they might get from a standard phone interview.

Also understand clearly, this is a job interview. the quickest way to ruin your prospects with a potential employer is to handle it less professionally than you would any other interview.

Best Skype Interview Tips

1. Prepare yourself technically

Prior to the interview, find out which video conferencing system will be used. These days, there are many possibilities, including, to mention a few, Skype, Face Time, and Google Hangouts.

Make sure everything is functioning properly and that the appropriate software is installed at least 24 hours beforehand.

Additionally, you should ascertain who will be calling whom and when for the interview. The last thing you want to happen is to be waiting for a call and then realize an hour later that you were supposed to be making the call.

2. Use your desktop or laptop computer, not your cellphone

Avoid using your phone to take the video interview if at all possible. Compared to a cellphone, desktop and laptop computers often have better audio and camera capabilities.

Make sure your phone is on a stable, firm surface if you must use it (we know, sometimes it’s inevitable). Make sure not to hold the phone with your hand

3. Dress Appropriately

Even if you won’t be meeting in person, you still need to dress appropriately. That implies you should be dressed appropriately for a business interview from head to toe, even if the interviewer can’t see your entire outfit.

Examine how your attire appears on camera, then think about your background and whether your chosen attire contrasts well with it.

Maintaining a professional appearance for a Skype interview will demonstrate your seriousness and intense interest in the position.

4. Use a Befitting Background

For a Skype call with friends, you can select a variety of backgrounds, but for an interview, it’s best to either blur your background or make sure that whatever is shown on camera behind you is appropriate.

Make sure there aren’t any piles of clothes or an unmade bed in the backdrop if you’re receiving the call in your bedroom.

If your workplace has a habit of becoming a catch-all space, tidy it up before your interview so that all your interviewer can see behind you is a neat workspace.
To be on the safe side, position your desk in front of a strong, distraction-free wall.

5. Run a Microphone and Video Testing

Make sure your microphone and video settings are operational before your interview.

You’re more likely to convey that you have fully prepared yourself for this encounter if you enter the interview with functional equipment.

Your video should be centered, the camera should be clean, and your microphone should transmit your sound without any static.

Your speakers should also function to receive audio from the hiring manager. Visit the Skype settings and test your equipment to make sure everything is operating as it should.

6. Maintain Eye Contact

As much as you can, try to keep eye contact with the camera. While it might be alluring to observe what your interviewer is doing (if it’s a two-way video conference) or even yourself in the monitor in place of them,

doing so will leave your interviewer with no view of you except for the one you are giving them when you are looking off to the side.

It gives the impression that you are making eye contact with the interviewer when you look directly into the camera. But that doesn’t mean you should stare at it without blinking! Maintain natural eye contact, and don’t forget to blink!

7. Stay in a Good and Proper Position

In order for your possible new employer to engage with you, observe your facial expressions, and make the call go well, you’ll want to be well-lit during the interview.

If possible, position your computer such that you are looking out a window that allows natural light in or at a desk lamp that will keep your face lighted.

It’s crucial that the light source focus on you and appear behind your computer, regardless of how it’s done.

When you practice your interview, consider how you’ll look in your attire, the environment, and your chosen light source to make sure there are no distracting glares.

8. Pick a Quiet Environment

You should try to place your computer in an area with the least potential interruptions because the amount of background noise during your interview can effect how smoothly the call goes.

Inform your roommates that you’ll be taking a crucial call and ask them not to bother you if at all possible.

Inform the hiring manager as soon as possible if there’s a risk that an interruption will happen, such as with children or dogs, so they won’t be too shocked if it does.

Think about muting your phone and stopping PC pop-up notifications as well.

9. Maintain good posture

Being professionally posed is extremely important in situations like this. While settling into your favorite chair may tempt you to slump, pay attention to your posture throughout the interview.

Keep your shoulders back, your eyes forward, and sit up straight in the chair as opposed to slouching. With the right posture, you might even communicate more clearly and project more confidence.

10. Make a Note

If you think having some notes on hand will be useful, make sure you are comfortable enough with the information in them to just occasionally glance at them.

Reading your notes aloud or seeming as though you are giving a prepared speech might disrupt the interview’s natural flow and draw the interviewer’s attention away from how sincere you sound.
