Admitting to an increase in demand for technical education, the Minister of Education William Davis, now regarded as the father of the Ontario College System, founded Ontario’s colleges of applied arts and technology to train individuals for employment in their various communities.

St. Lawrence College was established during this period in 1967 as part of the province’s initiative to set up many such institutions. These schools were also designed to provide career-oriented diploma and certificate courses, as well as uninterrupted education programs in the communities in which they are located.

Brockville was basically proposed as the site for the main campus of St. Lawrence College, but Kingston was eventually selected, since its larger population base would allow it to support a full campus. Some of the earliest full-time courses offered included Home Economics, Engineering Technology, Business Administration, Early Childhood Education, and Electronics Technician. Presently, almost 89 programs are offered.
