Italian Government Scholarships for Foreign Students

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) provides scholarships for foreign citizens residing outside Italy and Italian citizens living abroad (IRE)* for the academic year 2023-2024. These scholarships aim to support international cultural, scientific, and technological cooperation, promote Italian language and culture, and bolster Italy’s economic presence globally (as outlined in Law 288/55 and its subsequent amendments and additions).

The grants are available for individuals pursuing study, training, and/or research programs at Italian Higher Education Institutes, whether public or legally recognized.

What the Scholarship Covers:

  1. Tuition Fees Recipients may be excused from paying enrollment and tuition fees based on the policy of each University. However, the exemption does not apply to courses in Italian language and culture, for which enrollment fees are applicable.
  2. Health and Medical Insurance Grantees will benefit from health and medical/accident insurance provided by MAECI for the entire duration of the grant. This coverage does not extend to events resulting from pre-existing physical or pathological conditions.
  3. Financial Grant Grantees will receive a monthly stipend of 900 Euros, distributed every quarter, which will be deposited into their Italian bank account.
  4. The scholarship duration can be six or nine months, depending on the type of course. Renewals are only granted to applicants who demonstrate satisfactory academic progress.

Requirements:

  1. Academic qualifications Applications must be exclusively submitted by foreign students not residing in Italy and by Italian citizens living abroad (IRE)* who possess the necessary academic qualifications required for enrollment in an Italian University/Institute.   2. Age limits For Master’s Degree/Higher Education in Arts, Music, and Dance (AFAM) Programs/Italian Language and Culture Advanced Courses, applicants should have reached the age of majority and should not exceed 28 years of age by the deadline of this call (born after June 9th, 1994), except for renewals.
  3. For PhD Programs, applicants should have reached the age of majority and should not exceed 30 years of age by the deadline of this call (born after June 9th, 1992), except for renewals.
  4. For Research Projects under academic supervision, applicants should have reached the age of majority and should not exceed 40 years of age by the deadline of this call (born after June 9th, 1982).
  5. Language skills and proficiency To enroll in an Italian-taught course, applicants need to furnish a certificate demonstrating their proficiency in the Italian language. The minimum required level is B2 within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Candidates who were previously enrolled in an Italian-taught course at the University may submit a language certification issued by a language teacher within the University department.
  6. For English-taught courses, applicants should provide a language certificate proving their proficiency in English. The minimum level required is B2 within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Candidates from countries where English is an official language and who are applying for courses conducted entirely in English may provide a self-certification. There is no requirement for proof of proficiency in Italian for courses entirely taught in English.
  7. For Italian language and culture courses, applicants should present a certificate indicating their proficiency in the Italian language. The minimum level required is A2 within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
  8. For PhD programs and Research projects under academic supervision, no proof of language proficiency is necessary.
