Job Title: Data Enumerator – Qualitative Survey

Scope of work

  • The qualitative survey will make use of 3 tools namely, Focus groups discussion guide, Key Informant Interview guide and In-depth Interview guides.
  • One enumerator will lead the qualitative data collection process while the second enumerator will take notes of the entire process and document the verbal and non-verbal observations using the MC template.
  • These enumerators (interviewers) will be supportively supervised by the state data supervisors.
  • Prior to data collection, participants consents will be sought for interview and audio recording.
  • All consenting and eligible participants will be recruited within the communities and their views documented, translated and transcribed as appropriate.
  • All survey audio records, field notes and complete transcripts will be collated and analyzed by MC and disseminated to NMEP and other malaria stakeholders to inform malaria prevention and health system strengthening in Nigeria.

Purpose of Assignment:

  • Engage data enumerators that will conduct data collection using qualitative tools (Focused group discussion, Key Informant Interview and in-depth Interview guides) across 6 states on the Malaria Market Analysis project.
  • Conduct and submit the following.
    • Six (6) focused group discussion interviews records (3 from rural and 3 from urban across the 3 household income groups per urban and rural locations). Each FGD session must contain a minimum of 6 and maximum of 12 participant per group interviewed for a minimum of 60-90 minutes.
    • Ten (10) Key Informant Interviews will be conducted among Institutional Suppliers of ITNS and other malaria prevention commodities.
    • Eight (8) Indepth Interviews will be conducted per state (i.e 4 in urban and 4 in rural) among community opinion leaders and key stakeholders.
    • Ten (10) Key Informant interviews will be conducted among the national and state level private sector market stakeholders – NMEP, ACPN, PSN, Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), NAPMED, SMEP personnels and partners.
  • The data enumerators will Interview the following groups of participants during the survey. On the FGDs component, the household heads, vulnerable groups and students will be interviewed across rural and urban locations of each state. The Indepth Interviews (IDIs) will be conducted among community opinion leaderswhile the Key Informant Interviews will be conducted among the Institutional Suppliers of ITNS and other malaria prevention commodities such as; manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers and retailers in their selected state of resident.

Responsibilities

  • Identify eligible respondents and agree on an ideal interview time with the respondents.
  • Conduct the qualitative interview with the participant in a conducive environment to document the demand and supply factors including the consumer behaviour on prevention product ownership, product use, preferences, and awareness regarding malaria prevention in Nigeria.
  • Use Dc Voice recorders to elicit information from the diverse group of participants.
  • Review of data for accuracy and completeness before commencement of transcription and back translation into English language and submission to the supervisor.
  • Submission of signed activity timesheets.
  • Participate in pretesting of qualitative tools prior to field data collection.

Activity timeline for Data enumerators:

  • Training of enumerators and pretest of qualitative data collection tools.
  • Commencement of Qualitative survey in the six (6) study sites.
  • Review and confirmation of availability and schedule of interview dates from the households and malaria market stakeholders.
  • Comply with the responsible conduct of research guidelines by ensuring respondents anonymity, voluntariness in participation.
  • Ensure data is collected in safe spaces where respondents and interviewer can speak freely and comfortably devoid of distractions.
  • Comply with MMA research protocol throughout the data collection process.
  • Check to ascertain the integrity of the qualitative data.
  • Comply with the directive of the state data supervisors to ensure appropriate storage.
  • Submission of qualitative records for supervisor review before commencement of transcription
  • Attend daily relevant state level debriefing organised by data supervisors on challenges and mitigation plans as required.
  • Commencement of data transcription and back translation into English language as appropriate.

Deliverables:

  • Accurate and complete FGD, KII and IDI Audio files
  • Verbatim Transcription of FGDs and Interviews in local language.
  • Translation of Interviews and FGDs records from local language to English language.
  • Submission of accurate field notes to assigned state supervisors
  • Collection and submission of properly filled informed consent forms duly signed, or thumb printed by study participants
  • Daily report highlighting key activities submitted to the supervisor
  • Use of a correct and appropriate qualitative tool for each target respondent

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree / Higher National Diploma with a minimum of 1 year of experience in qualitative survey.
  • Experience of participation as a data enumerator in similar public health research
  • Experience in the use of android device in data collection (Kobocollect and SurveyCTO).
  • Working knowledge of the local language of the implementation state (Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo etc)
  • Residency within the state and proficiency in local language including spoken and written English Language
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills are required.
