Job Title: Drilling & Blasting Engineer
Job Summary
- The Drilling and Blasting Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, monitoring, and optimizing drilling and blasting operations to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective ore extraction.
- The role involves working closely with mining operations, geology, and safety teams to achieve production targets while adhering to regulatory and environmental guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop optimal drilling and blasting patterns for both surface and/or underground mining operations.
- Supervise and monitor drilling and blasting activities to ensure compliance with design and safety standards.
- Conduct blast performance analysis and implement improvements based on blast outcomes (fragmentation, vibration, dilution, etc.).
- Coordinate with geology and operations teams to align blasting plans with ore body geometry and mining schedules.
- Prepare and maintain blasting reports, logs, and regulatory documentation.
- Ensure safe handling, storage, and use of explosives in compliance with statutory regulations.
- Liaise with explosive suppliers and contractors, ensuring quality and timely delivery of blasting materials.
- Implement cost control measures and contribute to the reduction of drilling and blasting-related costs.
- Monitor environmental impacts including ground vibrations, air blast, and fly rock, and take corrective actions as necessary.
- Train and mentor junior staff and operators on best practices in drilling and blasting.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry technologies, equipment, and innovations.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering or related fields
- 3–5 years of experience in drilling and blasting operations, preferably in the mining industry.
- Valid Blaster’s Certificate of Competency (as per regulatory requirements).
- In-depth knowledge of explosive materials, initiation systems, and blasting techniques.
- Proficient in blast design software (e.g., BlastIQ, SHOTPlus, or equivalent).
- Strong understanding of mine planning and geology.
- Good communication, leadership, and analytical skills.
- Commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards.
