About University of British Columbia Scholarships for International Students

The University of British (UBC) recognizes the academic achievement of outstanding students from around the world by devoting more than $30 million annually to awards, scholarships, and other forms of financial support for international undergraduate students.

Over 105 countries have been represented among award recipients, 90 +countries represented among International Scholars, 200 +hours of developmental workshops and one-on-one support available to Scholars over the course of their degree, and over 500 International Scholars since 2001.

Four prestigious need-and-merit-based awards are available through UBC’s International Scholars Program. UBC offers approximately 50 scholarships each year across all four awards. You won’t select which award you wish to receive when you submit your application – our team will automatically consider you for the awards that you are eligible for.

Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award

This award recognizes international undergraduate students who demonstrate superior academic achievement, exceptional leadership skills, involvement in student affairs and community service, and recognized achievement in other key areas.

Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award

This award recognizes outstanding international undergraduate students from impoverished or war-torn areas who have achieved academic excellence under challenging circumstances, and who would be unable to attend university without significant financial assistance.

International Impact Award

This award is offered to exceptional students who have expressed commitment to and solutions for social justice issues, climate change, equity and inclusion, societal health and wellness, and freedom of expression.

Vantage One Excellence Award

This award is offered by UBC Vantage College for academically outstanding international students who do not yet meet the English Language Admission Standard for direct admission to UBC. The awards range in value up to the full cost of a student’s academic program and living expenses.

UBC Scholarships for International Students 2022 Eligibility for the Program

  • You must be an international student who will be studying in Canada on a Canadian study permit.
  • You must be entering UBC from a recognized secondary school, or transferring from your first year at a post-secondary college or other university.
  • You must have graduated from high school no earlier than the month of June, two years prior to the academic year you are applying to. For example, applicants for 2022 must have graduated from high school no earlier than June 2020.
  • You must be applying for your first undergraduate degree.
  • You must demonstrate superior academic achievement (achieve all As or equivalent standards).
  • You must demonstrate a level of financial need that would otherwise prevent you from pursuing a UBC degree. (UBC automatically considers all international students for the merit-based International Major Entrance Scholarships and Outstanding International Student Awards scholarships, totalling a maximum value of $25,000 per year. If this amount does not cover your needs for tuition and basic living expenses, you are eligible to apply for the International Scholars Program.)
  • You must meet UBC’s admission requirements, including general and degree-specific requirements and the English Language Admission Standard.

We will consider you for the Vantage One Excellence Award if:

  • All previous eligibility criteria apply, except you must not yet meet UBC’s English Language Admission Standard for direct admission to UBC. 
  • You must meet the UBC Vantage College admission requirements, including the English requirements for Vantage College.
  • You must be coming directly from high school
  • You must be beginning your undergraduate studies at UBC in the UBC Vantage One Program.

How to apply for the UBC International Scholars Program

Applications for the 2022 school year are now closed.

1. Decide on the academic program you want to study, and which campus you want to choose.

2. Submit your application to UBC.

3. To apply for the International Scholars Program, you must be nominated by your school or non-profit, and submit a reference from an academic referee. Confirm that your school or non-profit is able to nominate you, and inform your nominator and academic referee that you’d like to apply for the International Scholars Program.

A single high school, college, or university may nominate up to three students for UBC Vancouver (including Vantage College), and one student for UBC Okanagan. A non-profit may only nominate a high school student who is involved with their organization. This nomination will count towards the total nominations permitted from a student’s school.

(Please note: your nominator should be your school counselor or equivalent, and your academic referee should be someone who is familiar with you and your work – for example, your teacher for your chosen area of study.)

4. Gather your required financial information, as well as notes on any extracurricular activities and awards.

5. Apply for the International Scholars Program by completing the form.

UBC Scholarships Merit-based awards

As soon as you receive an offer of admission to UBC, you’ll automatically be considered for these merit-based awards. Consideration is based on your demonstrated academic achievement and your extracurricular involvement.

NOTE: If you apply for the International Scholars Program, you will not be considered for merit-based awards, including International Major Entrance Scholarships and Outstanding International Student Awards.

International Major Entrance (IMES) Scholarship

International Major Entrance Scholarships (IMES) are awarded to exceptional international students entering undergraduate programs at UBC. Students receive their IMES when they enter their first year at UBC, and the scholarships are renewable for up to three additional years of study. The number and level of these scholarships awarded each year vary, depending on available funding.

Eligibility

To be considered for the IMES, you must:

  • Be new to UBC, entering directly from secondary school.
  • Be an international student who will be studying at UBC on a Canadian study permit (student visa). (Changes to your citizenship status will affect your IMES eligibility.)
  • Demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and intellectual promise, as well as impressive extracurricular and community involvement.
  • Not be nominated for a need-and-merit-based International Scholars award.
  • Apply to UBC by January 15.

How to Apply IMES Scholarship UBC

If you apply to UBC by January 15, you will be automatically considered for the IMES.

Scholarship status

You will be considered for this scholarship shortly after you receive an offer of admission to UBC. Scholarship decisions are made between mid-March to the end of April each year.

Outstanding International Student Award

The Outstanding International Student (OIS) Award is a one-time, merit-based entrance scholarship awarded to qualified students when they are offered admission to UBC. Students selected for this award show strength academically and display involvement outside of the classroom. 

Eligibility

To be considered for an OIS Award, you must:

  • Be new to UBC, entering directly from secondary school or post-secondary (university or college).
  • Be an international student studying at UBC on a Canadian study permit (student visa). (Changes to your citizenship status will affect your scholarship eligibility.)
  • Demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and strong extracurricular involvement.
  • Not be nominated for a need-and-merit-based International Scholars award.
  • Apply to UBC by January 15.

How to Apply Outstanding International Student Award

If you apply to UBC by January 15, you will be automatically considered for the OIS Award.

Scholarship status

You will be considered for this scholarship shortly after you receive an offer of admission to UBC. Scholarship decisions are made between mid-March and the end of April each year.

Types of Scholarships and Awards for Canadian students

UBC is strongly committed to recognizing students for their academic excellence and leadership. Last year, UBC and its donors awarded $15 million to incoming UBC students for excellent grades, community, and school involvement, and demonstrated leadership.

The following awards are available to Canadian students:

Application deadlines for UBC Scholarships for International Students

December 1: You must have submitted your online application for admission to UBC and submitted your International Scholars Program application. Although you can specify two-degree choices in your application, only your first-choice degree will be considered for an International Scholars Program award.

January 31: Meet UBC’s English Language Admission Standard for direct-entry, or the English language requirement for UBC Vantage College if you have applied to a Vantage One program and are hoping to be considered for the Vantage One Excellent Award.

January 31: Submit any documents required for your admission to UBC. Please submit by this deadline, not the date indicated in your “next steps” email.

Mid-April: You will be informed if you have received an award.
