Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) Program, it is essential for applicants to meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Age: Applicants must be between 16-18 years old by July 21, 2024, which is the first day of Session III.
- English Fluency: Applicants should possess the ability to actively participate in a challenging academic curriculum conducted entirely in English.
- Grade Level: Applicants must currently be a high school sophomore or junior (or the international equivalent).
- Graduation Date: Applicants should be scheduled to graduate in May/June 2025 or 2026 if residing in the Northern Hemisphere, or in November/December 2024 or 2025 if residing in the Southern Hemisphere.
- YYGS Participation: Applicants must be applying to YYGS for the first time. Previous attendance in YYGS sessions held in previous summers (up to 2023) disqualifies applicants from participating in YYGS 2024. However, if an applicant previously applied but was not admitted or could not attend, and meets the above eligibility criteria, they are encouraged to re-apply for YYGS 2024.
Please note that these age restrictions are in place due to regulations governing summer programs for underage participants, and no exceptions can be made.
YYGS welcomes applications from students of ALL nationalities and offers the opportunity for students from ALL countries to apply for need-based financial aid.
Types of Yale Young African Scholars (YYGS) Scholarships
Different types of scholarships are offered for the Yale Young African Scholars (YYGS) program in 2024. These include:
- Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) Alumni Scholarship: This scholarship is available to students who have completed the YYAS program in any previous summer before 2024. It covers the full cost of tuition and travel, allowing recipients to attend any of the YYGS sessions offered in 2024.
- Young Leaders (YL) Scholarship: The YL Scholarship is open to students from the United States and around the world who self-identify as one or more of the following: Black or of African descent (including Africa and the Caribbean), Hispanic and/or Latino/Latina/Latinx, members of Indigenous peoples, nations, and/or communities, or refugees*. This scholarship also covers the complete cost of tuition and travel, enabling students to participate in any of the YYGS sessions available in 2024.
Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) Program Prize: These scholarships cover all tuition fees and travel expenses, allowing students to attend any of the YYGS sessions available in 2024.

The Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) Program Prize is a scholarship that fully covers the costs of tuition and travel for students to attend any of the YYGS sessions available in 2024. By awarding this scholarship, students are given the opportunity to participate in the program without the financial burden of tuition fees and travel expenses.
How to Apply
To submit your application for the Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) program, follow these steps:
Application Steps for YYGS:
Step 1: Familiarize yourself with the eligibility criteria for YYGS.
Step 2: Review the required components for the application.
Step 3: Take a look at a sample blank application provided in PDF format. Start preparing your answers for as many application questions as possible.
Step 4: Collect the contact information of a parent/guardian, teacher, or school official. Share the sample blank application with them and gather the necessary information.
Completing the Application:
Step 5: Click on the “APPLY NOW” button to start your YYGS application. Remember to keep a record of your email and password for future access.
Step 6: Review the “Review” page of the application to ensure all required components are included. Address any pages that require additional information.
Step 7: After completing your application, go to the “Review” page and click on the “Submit Application” button at the bottom.
Step 8: Access your Applicant Status Portal and pay the application fee of $70 USD for Early Action or $85 USD for Regular Decision*. Note that the YYGS application fees are non-refundable. If you have applied for a fee waiver, monitor your Applicant Status Portal for the approval status. If denied, your application will be reviewed upon payment of the YYGS application fee.
Step 9: Keep an eye on your email inbox for a YYGS confirmation receipt, which confirms the successful submission of your application. Confirmation emails are typically sent within 24-48 hours, although occasional payment processing delays may occur.
Deadline: To be eligible for the scholarships offered, you must have completed the entire online YYGS application, including the Need-Based Financial Aid section, before January 10, 2024.
