The Academy Scholars Program aims to identify and support exceptional scholars at the early stages of their careers, whose work combines disciplinary excellence in the social sciences or law with a deep understanding of the language, history, or culture of countries or regions outside of the United States or Canada. Academy Scholars are expected to reside in the Cambridge/Boston area for the duration of their appointments, with the exception of approved research travel.

These scholars possess inventiveness, initiative, inquisitiveness, and innovation, and their research in cultures or regions outside of the US or Canada shows great promise as a foundation for outstanding careers in leading universities or international institutions.

Selected scholars will be awarded a two-year, in-residence postdoctoral fellowship at The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, located at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. They will receive significant financial and research support to pursue sustained research projects or additional training in their chosen fields and areas of study. The Academy Scholars will also benefit from mentorship by the Senior Scholars, a distinguished group of senior faculty members at Harvard University, who will assist them in achieving their intellectual potential.
