We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Community Mobilization Coordinator an upcoming FCDO-funded opportunity in Northwest Nigeria. This position is contingent upon award. The anticipated four-year Programme will deliver support to communities to promote learning and inclusion of girls in Kaduna, Kano and Jigawa (KJJ) and policy at federal/national level as appropriate. The programme will:   

  • Improve/build  foundational  skills  of  marginalised  children  (particularly  girls)  through community learning initiatives 
  • Reduce demand side  barriers  to  education  to  enable  and  improve  learning  for marginalised  children  (particularly  for  girls)  by  addressing  social  norms  and  harmful practices 
  • Increase  the  evidence  base  and  rigorously assess the effectiveness of community and household level learning interventions 

Position Description: 

The Community Mobilization Coordinator will be based in Kano and report to the CoP. S/he will work with the Education Coordinator, Education Officers and sub-grantees to foster relationships with community structures and design community-based activities that improve foundational learning, address harmful social norms, and increase demand for education across Kano, Kaduna and Jigawa. To accomplish this s/he will identify existing community structures in target areas, understand their resources, needs, priorities and concerns, build the capacity of community structures to support learning and access, and develop feedback loops that foster information sharing between communities and the programme.

The Community Mobilization Coordinator will develop guidance for community entry and oversee community engagement in each of the three KKJ states, and work with the Education Coordinator and other specialists to create and deliver trainings, information campaigns, and local behavior change initiatives that build capacity of community structures and improve access to quality learning opportunities.

Minimum Requirements:  

  • Master’s degree in education, international development, or a related field. 
  • 8+ years of experience supporting complex donor-funded education activities in challenging environments. 
  • Experience supporting large scale activities including strategic planning, work planning, contingency planning and report writing. Experience supporting remote teams.
  • Experience collaborating with MEL counterparts to measure, learn from and adapt programming.  
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing programing that is flexible and responsive to changing needs and security.  
  • Knowledge of the barriers to education that girls and marginalized children face in KKJ.   
  • Proven ability to mobilize community members to identify and address local challenges.
  • Familiarity with frameworks, best practices and interventions for shifting community attitudes and behaviours, particularly towards education.
  • Understanding of who the decision-makers, influencers, and advocates are for education in Northwest Nigeria, particularly for girls.
  • Experience working with men and boys to raise awareness, and influence attitudes and behaviours around harmful social norms.
  • Previous experience supporting community mobilization or behavior change initiatives in KKJ
  • Fluency in English required. Fluency in Hausa preferred.
