Vanier Scholarships is a Canadian Government scholarship program launched in 2008 to strengthen Canada’s ability to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and establish Canada as a global center of excellence in research and higher learning. Up to 166 scholarships are awarded annually. A total of up to 500 scholarships are active at any time.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships is a 3 years (non-renewable) scholarships valued at $50,000 per year. Vanier Scholars demonstrate leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, and/or engineering and health.

Vanier Scholarship Details

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) program helps Canadian institutions attract highly qualified doctoral students. This scholarship program offers $50,000 per year for three years during doctoral studies.

In summary:

  • Level of Study: Professional degree (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD)
  • Institution(s): Canadian Universities with Vanier CGS allocation. Without exception, the Vanier CGS is tenable only at the eligible Canadian institution that submitted the nomination.
  • Study in: Canada
  • Courses Offered: PhD programmes (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD) in health research; natural sciences and/or engineering research; and social sciences and/or humanities research
  • Scholarship Value:  $50,000 per year for three years during doctoral studies.

Eligibility Criteria for Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships 2022 (Fully Funded)

Confirm that you and your nominating institution meet all the criteria below before you apply for a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS).

Nominations that do not meet all eligibility criteria will be deemed ineligible.

Citizenship

  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and foreign citizens are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier CGS.

To be considered for a Vanier CGS, you must:

  • be nominated by only one Canadian institution, which must have received a Vanier CGS quotaFootnote1;
  • be pursuing your first doctoral degree (including joint graduate research program such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD – if it has a demonstrated and significant research component). Note that only the PhD portion of a joint degree is eligible for funding;
  • intend to pursue, in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results, full-time doctoral (or a joint graduate research program such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) studies and research at the nominating institution; For joint graduate research program, only the PhD portion of a joint graduate research program is eligible for funding.
  • have completed no more than 20 months of full-time study in their doctoral program as of May 1, 2022;
    • The doctoral program would begin after the completion of a Master’s degree. The months of study completed are calculated from the doctoral enrolment date.
  • have completed no more than 32 months of full-time study in their doctoral program (i.e. joint graduate research program, fast-track, accelerated), by May 1, 2022 if:
    • enrolled in a joint graduate research program, e.g., MD/PhD, MA/PhD, DVM/PhD. Applicants in this category have access to the 32-month window whether or not they were previously enrolled in a Master’s program:
      • The months of study are calculated starting from the date on which an applicant is officially registered in the joint program (including the Master’s portion of the program).
    • accelerated directly from a Bachelor’s to a PhD (not previously enrolled in a Master’s program);
      • The months of study completed are calculated from the doctoral enrolment date.
    • accelerated (Fast-track) from a Master’s degree into a Doctoral program without obtaining the Master’s degree.
      • The months of study completed are calculated from the original Master’s enrolment date.
  • have achieved a first-class average, as determined by your institution, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Candidates are encouraged to contact the institution for its definition of a first-class average; and
  • must not hold, or have held, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHRNSERC or SSHRC to undertake or complete a doctoral program.

Eligibility of program of study

  • An eligible doctoral program must include a significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital and/or exhibit that is merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level as a requirement for a completion of the program.
  • Joint graduate research programs with a professional degree (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) as well as clinically-oriented programs of study, including clinical psychology, are also eligible programs if they have a significant autonomous research component, as described above.

Note: ResearchNet will only allow the creation of one application per applicant. Applicants should only seek a nomination from the institution at which they want to study and are advised to discuss their decision with the nominating institution before they submit the application through ResearchNet.

How to Apply for Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships for International Students

  • Applications are initiated in one of two ways. Either:
    1. the student informs the faculty of graduate studies at the selected institution of their intent to apply to the Vanier CGS program; or
    2. The institution initiates the nomination process by contacting the desired candidate.
  • Applications are prepared by the student and submitted to the nominating institution by their internal deadline (set in ResearchNet by the nominating institution) using the ResearchNet application system.
  • The nominating institution performs the internal candidate selection process.
  • The nominating institution forwards recommended nominations to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat) by November 2, 2021 (20:00 Eastern Time).
  • The Secretariat coordinates the review process.
  • The Secretariat presents the recommendations to the Tri-Agency Programs (TAP) Steering Committee.
  • The TAP Steering Committee endorses and approves final decisions for the Vanier CGS program.
  • Nominated candidates are notified of the competition results in April 2022.

Important notes:

  • Each student can only be nominated once per competition. If more than one institution is interested in nominating an individual student for a Vanier CGS, the student must choose one institution to submit their nomination. Multiple nominations will not be accepted.
  • Based on its quota and an internal evaluation process, the institution will forward its nominations to the Secretariat.
  • The institution is responsible for notifying candidates if their application is not selected for nomination to the Secretariat. The timing for this notification may vary by institution.
  • Students are responsible for contacting the institution for more information about selecting the appropriate federal granting agency, finding the appropriate contact person within a department/faculty, and for advice or questions related to content and how best to present the information in their application.

When is the Vanier Scholarship 2022 Application Deadlines

There are two deadlines pertaining to the 2021-2022 competition:

  1. Institution internal deadline: Following the student’s identification in ResearchNet of the institution proposed for doctoral study (see Task 10), an additional deadline date and time will appear at the top of each page. This is the deadline by which your application must be submitted to the institution through ResearchNet. This deadline is set and controlled by each institution. You will not be able to submit your application past this precise date and time.
  2. Program deadline: Institutions must forward their selected nominations to the Vanier CGS program by November 2, 2021 (20:00 Eastern Time).
