One year Marshall Scholarship

The one-year Marshall Scholarship is aimed at applicants who have strong reasons for wishing to study in the UK, but have a clear post-scholarship plan.

The objectives of the Marshall Scholarships are:

  • To enable intellectually distinguished young Americans, their country’s future leaders, to study in the UK.
  • To help Scholars gain an understanding and appreciation of contemporary Britain.
  • To contribute to the advancement of knowledge in science, technology, the humanities and social sciences and the creative arts at Britain’s centres of academic excellence.
  • Motivate Scholars to act as ambassadors from the USA to the UK and vice versa throughout their lives thus strengthening British American understanding.
  • To promote the personal and academic fulfilment of each Scholar

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the 2022 One Year Scholarships, candidates should:

  • be citizens of the United States of America (at the time they apply for a scholarship);
  • (by the time they take up their scholarship ie September 2022) hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States;
  • have obtained a grade point average of not less than 3.7 on their undergraduate degree at the time of application (if the last grades the candidate received were Fall 2019 this GPA will be used).
  • have graduated from their first undergraduate college or university after April 2019.
  • not have studied for, or hold a degree or degreeequivalent qualification from a British University or GCSE or A level qualifications undertaken in the UK.

AWARDS

The total value of a Marshall Scholarship varies according to the circumstances (place of residence, selected university, etc.) of each Scholar but the figure tends on average to be about £38,000 a year.

Two year Marshall Scholarship

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans with a high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom in a system of higher education recognized for its excellence.

ELIGIBILITY

To qualify for 2022 awards, candidates should:

  • be citizens of the United States of America (at the time they applied for a scholarship);
  • (by the time they take up their scholarship in September 2022) hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States;
  • have obtained a grade point average of no less than 3.7 on their undergraduate degree at the time of application (if the last grade the candidate received were Fall 2019 this GPA will be used).
  • have graduated from their first undergraduate college or university after April 2019.
  • have not studied for, or held, a degree or equivalent qualification from a British University or GCSE or A-level qualifications undertaken in the UK

Marshall Scholarships 2022 Requirements

The selection criteria are divided into three equally weighted categories:

The Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission promotes an equal opportunities policy. Scholarship awards are based on merit following a fair and transparent selection process. The Marshall Commission seeks and recruits students from all backgrounds.

Who is Eligible to Apply

Before completing the application candidates are advised to consider the objectives of the Marshall Scholarship Programme (see the opening paragraph of the Rules for Candidates) and to be aware that the selection committees are seeking candidates who have the potential to excel as scholars, leaders, and as contributors to improved UK-US understanding.

To be eligible for a 2022 Marshall Scholarship, candidates must:

  • Be citizens of the United States of America (at the time they applied for a scholarship);
  • (By the time they take up their scholarship in September 2022) hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States;
  • have obtained a grade point average of no less than 3.7 on their undergraduate degree at the time of application. We do not accept rounded GPA’s.
  • have graduated from their first undergraduate college or university after April 2019.
  • Not have studied for, or held, a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from a British university or GCSE or A Levels taken at school in the UK.

Who is Not Eligible to Apply

If you wish to study for any of the below Degrees, you are not eligible to apply for the Marshall Scholarship because these degrees are not funded under the Marshall Scholarship.

  • Second BA/BSc (undergraduate) Degrees
  • MBA (any university)
  • MPhil Development Studies (University of Oxford)
  • MSc/MFE Financial Economics (any university)
  • MSc Global Health Science and Epidemiology (University of Oxford)
  • MSc International Health and Tropical Medicine (University of Oxford)
  • MSc Law and Finance (University of Oxford)
  • MPP (Public Policy) (University of Oxford)
  • Degrees leading to professional qualifications in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science and law (these degrees typically take 5 years to complete)
  • Degrees that require extended periods away from the University or the UK, including joint degrees with Universities not in the UK
  • Masters degrees that are 15 months or 28 months in length
  • PGDip/Certificates in any subject
  • Distance Learning Degrees
  • Courses that start in January
  • Supervised research not leading to a degree qualification
  • One year Marshall Scholarship candidates must be registered for degrees that are 12 months in duration. Courses that run for 10 months or less, ie where the course ends before August will not be funded on the one year Scholarship. Please check the university websites carefully for the duration of the degree in months. There are no exceptions to this regulation.
  • It is not possible to undertake a Masters longer than 12 months in the second year of the Scholarship.

Note: To be considered for the joint Marshall Scholarships you must include any of the above institutions on your application form as your first choice.

NB: Candidates for all of these Scholarships will compete in the main Marshall Scholarship competition and if no-one of sufficient quality is found these Scholarships will not be offered.

How to Apply for Marshall Scholarships

To apply for the ongoing Marshall Scholarship, ensure you have read all the presented requirements. and be sure you fit in.

Further Application Instructions:

Candidates fill out the form and submit it through the system to their undergraduate institution, the institution ensures that the application is complete and decides whether or not to endorse it.

If the Institution decides to endorse the application they will add the letter of endorsement and will then submit it through the system to the appropriate regional committee.

Candidates should contact the appropriate contact at their institution if they are considering applying for a Marshall Scholarship.

When is the Marshall Scholarship Application Deadline?

  • Applications for the 2022 Marshall Scholarship is now closed.
  • The Application form for the 2023 competition will be available in early June 2022.
